[xs-67] zuramone - the spiders dance

Nowadays many rock musicians are used to have side projects, where they include electronics. That's not something particulary new. We were already used to see phenomena like this in the 70s and the 80s, and it was exactly what happened with alex (aka zuramone), the drums player from the evora's (south-west of portugal in the south-west of europe) band "lotus mecanica". He was also drummer in the les baton rouge band and he is involved in another band with musicians from les baton rouge, great lesbian show and ideas for muscles.

Musically we can say that Alex's band (zuramone), is actually some sort of rockabilly stuff, and although this is not particulary very close to rockabilly, it ended by being like some sort of hybrid between some drum n bass (sometimes close to photek when the acoustic drums appears), and something close to trance music, reminding me some aproaches in shpongle. In short, hardware electronic instruments, like drum machines, synths and so on, then a couple of guitars, and some drums.

Darkhalo - Phase Shift [MEM-008]

A Mephtik existe desde 2001. Com um periodo de hiatus retornaram recentemente às edições, a mais recente é este album de Darkhalo.

"Sorry for the long absence once again, but this time it's worth the wait! We have a special release today courtesy of demoscene legend Darkhalo. It's his first full release in 8 years, and his biggest release to date, and it's quite amazing. I highly recommend checking out the review of the album as well as an extensive interview with darkhalo over on OSV.

This is a nice mix of ambient, drum 'n' bass, and house music, with my particular favorites being "Mind of Goborobo" and "Boss Rush [SMB2]," which is a remix of the boss theme from Super Mario Bros. 2. SuperCollider

SuperCollider is an environment and programming language originally released in 1996 by James McCartney for real-time audio synthesis and algorithmic composition.[2][3]
Since then it has been evolving into a system used and further developed by both scientists and artists working with sound. It is an efficient and expressive dynamic programming language which makes it an interesting framework for acoustic research, algorithmic music and interactive programming.
Released under the terms of the GNU General Public License in 2002, SuperCollider is free software. The latest version (3.3) was released in April 2009.

a versão beta do maxforlive encontra-se disponivel para quem estiver interessado, em usar o MaxMSP, integrado dentro do ableton live.. posso dizer que ja lhe pus as maos em cima, estou contente com o resultado.. provavelmente vai ser desta que arranjo pretexto para comprar o ableton live com este magnifico add-on.. para terem uma ideia, desde quinta feira ate agora, programei ao todo ai meia duzia de efeitos (alguns ja tinha pre-programado em max), entre eles, um modulo de stutter com tracking de pitch e amplitude, um modulo de ring modulation com pitch following, entre outras coisas.. estou tambem a implementar um modulo baseado em objectos do CNMAT, com possibilidade de comunicação via OSC - OpenSoundControl (muito mais rapido que MIDI) - para comunicação com software third party (ex: Reaktor, SuperCollider, Processing, Pure data, Quartz Composer, etc.

FeedbackLoop Label

Caros amigos,

venho desta forma apresentar-vos o meu mais recente projecto FeedbackLoop Label. Uma editora que pretendo seja um complemento às minhas actividades na XS Records [pt netlabel] e que se pode considerar também uma netlabel, mas com um funcionamento um pouco diferente. Assim, pretendo com a FeedbackLoop Label editar 3-4 edições por ano no máximo, exclusivamente álbuns, e apenas com licença de Creative Commons. A escolha dos álbuns a editar é subjectiva, mas tem de ser música que resista a mais do que 2 ou 3 edições fortuitas. Quero com a FeedbackLoop label fazer um contraponto à edição de música desenfreada que não permite o seu conveniente usufruto.

A forma de funcionamento terá 3 fases:
1- edição de um ep/single extraído do álbum que será imediatamente disponibilizado para download gratuito e em simultâneo o álbum na íntegra estará em pré escuta.
2- é dada oportunidade aos ouvintes de oferecer donativos durante os 3 meses seguintes para que o álbum em pré escuta possa ficar disponível para download gratuito (para tal será usado o serviço SellYourRights - http://www.sellyourrights.com/) nesta fase um montante mínimo de donativos estará estipulado e só depois desse ser atingido é que o álbum ficará disponível para download (os donativos serão devolvidos caso o limite não seja atingido). Acabado o tempo limite a FeedbackLoop em conjunto com o artista com os direitos sobre a sua obra reservam-se no direito de decidir sobre o destino a dar ao álbum em causa.
3- caso haja donativos será editada uma série limitada de cd's

O objectivo deste processo é maximizar o prazer dos intervenientes. Por um lado os ouvintes terão sempre acesso a parte da obra de forma gratuita e a possibilidade de ajudar o artista a difundir a sua música, porque ao efectuar donativo estará a possibilitar a edição de um objecto físico (que infelizmente para um circuito de rádios e revistas ainda se afigura como o único meio de divulgação possível). Por outro lado, o artista dá-se a conhecer aos seus ouvintes atraves dos canais de uma "netlabel" e ao mesmo tempo poderá vir a ususfruir de uma extensão da divulgação aos canais mais convencionais do meio musical.

Experimental Little Monkey - Strange Dumpling Cheeks

Depois de ter explorado "C'mmons Baby!", um excelente programa de rádio em formato podcast sugerido por ps aqui no blog, descobri os ELM (Experimental Little Monkey), uma banda interessante do país de "nuestros hermanos" e que fazem uma música influenciada pelo post-rock de toada mais europeu.

"Strange Dumpling Cheeks" composto por 8 canções todas cantadas em espanhol e foi editado pela Trastienda, uma netlabel sediada mesmo aqui ao lado, Salamanca.

Yesterday, Les Hall suggested we should make the software that created Boolean Sequencing available to all.
And so we did!
Here's what he had to say:

"Thank you for listening to my Boolean Sequencing music. It is created with a program that I wrote in the music programming language ChucK. The program is an automatic pseudorandom song generator, and I've given away the source code so you can run it yourself for free. To run it you need to get the freeware ChucK miniAudicle which is multi platform (Win, Linux, Mac).

To get you started, here's a quick tutorial:

1. download and install ChucK miniAudicle
2. download the program by right clicking and saving the file
3. start ChucK miniAudicle
4. open up the program
5. click on "Start Virtual Machine" button
6. click on "Add Shred", the green "+" symbol
7. listen and enjoy

It automatically generates a song every time you run it and saves it in "strat.wav"; check the preferences to change the "save" directory.
You can also change the parameters of the program at the top of the code file to alter the way that the music gets generated. See the source code comments for explanations of the parameters.

This release is a simple collection of outtakes from several months of production messing with samples collected mostly from retro and vintage sources funded in cybernetic archives and hand craft tape registries ripped and shared in the most recondite blogs around the >infernet … if you are so kind to take some minutes of your diary play list routine and listen it with you favorite headphones …you probably will find some weird musical takes usually slowed down and contrasted with some usual hop beats, some audio cinematic moments inserted like a subliminal brainwashing experience driving you mad till made you totally slowmotion dancing doll … this 6 raw tracks have been haunting around in my hard drive for almost 2 years … time to share it.

[xs-66] BpOlar - subversive vespers

BpOlar is son of a jazz musician and as such he was raised from a very young age listening to the jazz masters, and although is approach diverted from this it is part of his background and as such is part of his aproach to the berlin electronic music scene. BpOlar is also a multidisciplinary artist, creating digital drawings and paintings and 3D video clips to document his music and for live usage, or the opposite (makes music to illustrate video). One of these works is presented together with this release.

BpOlar music is strongly focused on creating textures, with a close relation with ambient music. This textures are nonetheless rough and arid, and lead us to alien environments where beats, noises and voices all create suspense moments, where you feel alert all the way through. This release is composed of four tracks and a bonus movie, that complements this particular vision.

If you pay attention to BpOlar work you'll find, in his drawings/paintings, movies and music, traces of this imaginary world, where the central element is the feeling of unsettlement.

Field Notes + From The Bridge

A inglesa Earth Monkey Productions e a alemã Konkretourist têm novas edições tendo por base gravações de campo. No caso da 1ª, Field Notes viu a luz a alguns dias atrás e é uma dupla colectânea de temas e artistas around the world. Dividido em 2 volumes, este trabalho discográfico parte de várias gravações de campo, ora manipuladas, ora apresentadas na sua forma + pura, num todo coeso e dinâmico, muito bom para os ouvidos...

No segundo caso, depois do EP Braye Harbour, de Dallas Simpson, saiu recentemente From The Bridge, do projecto Son Clair (Thom Carter), uma montagem áudio a partir de 18 horas de gravações num mesmo local. Altamente recomendado!
