[FbL006] landrecorder - morning-afternoon-evening

Landrecorder announces the importance of framing in his technique at the album's outset, when "Morning" begins with an acoustic guitar part on repeat, as if a needle has been set down more than once at the same place on an old piece of vinyl. A similar sense of nostalgia is infused in all three tracks, from the mournful harmonica on "Morning" to the distant chatter of children on "Afternoon," to the way the sound of a car driving past brings "Evening" (and, hence, the full set) to a close.

This compositional technique mirrors the process of memory, things combined in unlikely combinations, and in unlikely proportions: sometimes warped, sometimes laid bare. And both approaches, in Landrecorder's hands, lead to tantalizing results.

Impulsive Habitat - Nova netlabel

A Impulsive Habitat é uma nova netlabel ligada à Test Tube que ambiciona lançar trabalhos dentro daquilo que se pode chamar de field recordings e derivações do género.

O trabalho de David Vélez e Juan José Calarco, juntamente com Pedro Leitão da Test Tube originou a Impulsive Habitat que já tem disponível um disco de Joaquín Gutiérrez Hadid, "Vending Machines".

After several months of hard work we are proud and enthusiast to officially unwrap Impulsive Habitat - a division of test tube netlabel - a publishing project label conceived with the purpose of publishing field recording-based sound works. We also encourage multidisciplinary projects that link sound projects with visuals and video work.

Impulsive label is a project originated by David Vélez and Juan José Calarco both sound artists who joined forces with test tube netlabel manager Pedro Leitâo to finally come up with Impulsive Habitat.

For our first release we have the fortune to publish 'Vending machine', the first official release of Joaquín Gutiérrez Hadid, a promising young artist from Argentina whose sound and visual work is noteworthy. 'Vending machine' is a very powerful piece of work that very likely will mark the beginning of an extensive series of releases by Joaquín around the world.

For our second release (available pretty soon) we will have the honor to publish 'The alarming blend of three arches' by Dallas Simpson, an emblematic figure on the world of sound art and field recordings who has been working with binaural sounds for more than a decade.

No caso da 1ª, Field Notes viu a luz a alguns dias atrás e é uma dupla colectânea de temas e artistas around the world. Dividido em 2 volumes, este trabalho discográfico parte de várias gravações de campo, ora manipuladas, ora apresentadas na sua forma + pura, num todo coeso e dinâmico, muito bom para os ouvidos...

[xs-63] subterminal - filled with light

With eyes wide open.
Like in a reawakening. A strange awake that repeats itself every night; every passing day, or so it seems. Like a virtual experience; or maybe not. Maybe it is just a normal but scary awakening. ... "Filled With Light".

"Filled With Light" awakens us in two different ways. The first, because it is only an EP which is part of an album yet to be released; the second, because in that album, poetry, a core element always present in Subterminal's work, makes an eulogy to digital life. "Filled With Light" is like a trailer of a full movie that we anticipate; a summary with a beginning middle and end. For now, the awakening is what matters most and "Filled With Light" awakes; awakes us.

In that slow awake, "With You" introduces us to the theme, to the electronic principle that conducts the EP. However, "Filled With Light" is the track that captures our attention; because of the movement; the layers of sound; the excellent alto viola played by Tiago Morgado. There is a slight techno-industrial mood coloring Leonardo Rosado's words, the man behind Subterminal. At last, "For the First Time" definitely introduces us to what's coming. A confrontation with a different reality; or, an almost-reality. "For the First Time" introduces us to a confrontation between poetry and technology, created by dense sound ambiences, images, differing in rhythm and form. They are different lines of the same life; parallel or perpendicular. The exhaustion of conflict.

"Filled With Light" was composed and played almost entirely with an iPhone, with some extra sounds from other objects. After "Alumina" and "Insight", released in 2009, the reawakening of Subterminal is of happiness. "Filled With Light" is a great step forward when comparing with prior releases, which leads to the expectation of a very interesting conceptual album. Coupled with the refinement of his personal electronic universe, the author added a better voice treatment. The production of the EP was made by Tiago Morgado.

after releasing karlheinz essl performance with klaus burger, we are releasing carlos perales, which is like a returning to the musical orientations of electroacoustic avant garde music, but this time in fixed media (acousmatic) support. and in this sense we are happy because we are doing things each step to make the music we release reaching as many people as possible, and not to confine composers and musicians to their own home studio. we can say that we are as happy to release perales as we were happy to release poros or essl. and we cannot speak as well of carlos music has he speaks, reason why we leave you his text about his his music written by himself.

SYNAPSE

The brain of intelligent mammals constitutes the most organized form of matter known until now. Trying to understand this operating, the scientist behaves as an engineer would do in front of a machine; this is, firstly he would study and identify the components and then he would try to quarrel how do they work and how do these relations establish between them as a whole. In these relations, the structural and functional unit corresponds to the neuronal synapses. This way so, this interaction among neuronal components is the base of our cognition.

There exist cerebral diseases that are tied to an abnormal functioning of some neuronal synapses. Certain pathologies, as the cerebral arteriosclerosis, more known as Alzheimer, have been unjustly introduced in our society. This disease is caused principally by destruction of neurons of a cerebral region named the basal nucleus of Meynert, which establishes cholinergic synapses with the cerebral cortex. Our life turns then into a carrousel of false images, dismembered recollections, slanted impressions, constant dreams... This sonic synapses is dedicated to all whom have to fight against themselves.

MYSTIC NITS

In full technological modernity surprise me to see even the manual method to remove with patience the nits from the hair of children. Sometimes my subconscious leads me along grotesque paths and makes me to do some bizarre associations. In this work I see a craftsman against this nits, but this time, the nits are not other than ideas that the worship of ancient myths. At the same time those are difficult to remove, they also put it not that easy. Modernity cannot remain in vain advancement of technologies and therefore this craftsman wants to eliminate all traces of old-fashioned prejudices, fears, religious ties, double and triple standards.

HYDRA

Aubrey de Grey, engineer specialized on data analysis, argues that genetic senescence (molecular degeneration) is a parameter that, according to the latest research, could be corrected. He claims that we have a 50% chance of achieving the goal of living until 1000 years in 25 to 30 years of appropriate research. In this case, the genetic information of cells that go growing old and deteriorating would be corrected. Based on this conjecture my attention focused on simple hydridae such as Hydra, which do not have this congenial defect. The Hydra is a fresh-water animal, usually a few millimeters long and very interesting for the scientific community because it has this regenerative ability. They appear to be unique in the animal world because of not suffering from senescence. Based on this ability to self reparation, the work is divided into 3 sections. Each of them have a similar behavior, as the used samples develop micro evolutions on themselves, becoming degenerate and transforming to similar materials.

Luis Antero - Sound Narratives vol.7

Depois do recente lançamento pela portuguesa MiMi Records do 6º volume das Sound Narratives, eis que chega mais um volume da série.
Chama-se «Big Wheel», foi lançado pela alemã Konkretourist, e constitui um trabalho de recolha fonográfica tendo por base uma antiga nora de água ainda em funcionamento, na aldeia de S. Sebastião da Feira, Oliveira do Hospital, Coimbra, em Maio ultimo.
Para além do tema titulo, este EP conta ainda com 2 "canções de água" com a magnifica voz de Carol Nike.

Pela primeira vez sairam duas edições em simultâneo na MiMi Records. A edição [mi109] traz-nos o NRYY, um artista japonês que que nos oferece uma viagem de onze temas ao som dos ritmos abstractos e barulhentos, colagens, sonoridades cinematográficas e ambientes densos.

"Sound Narratives Vol. 6" é o resultado dessas gravações durante uma viagem entre Oliveira do Hospital e a cidade de Coimbra.

"Stall" Luís Antero + Marcus Kuerten

Stall é a primeira colaboração entre Luís Antero e Marcus Kuerten pouco depois da edição de "Sound Narratives, Vol.5", pela Portuguesa Enough Records, que espelha certas identidades sonoras citadinas com gravações ocorridas na baixa de Coimbra e em dois diferentes pontos de Oliveira do Hospital; Luís Antero transporta-nos novamente ao ambiente rural, com gravações de animais, nesta colaboração com Marcus Kuerten que gravou os bovinos na Alemanha, as ovelhas foram gravadas por Antero em Portugal. A edição é da Chinesa Bypass Netlabel e apresenta uma remistura pelo produtor e curador da Bypass, Zhang JW.

Música absoluta da floresta

O lançamento (ou lançamentos, na realidade) a que este texto reporta, é já de Agosto de 2007, mas recebi hoje do Thelmo uma cópia dum artigo saído no início deste mês lá no Brasil e achei que valia a pena todos lermos. Quem sabe depois não terão curiosidade de ir ouvir a obra deste Pernambucano sui generis. O texto vai mesmo em português do Brasil... façam de conta que o acordo ortográfico já entrou em vigor...

Música absoluta da Floresta

Pássaros, mamíferos, insetos, plantas, árvores e vento é tudo o que se ouve nos discos da série Field recordings, gravados pelo pernambucano Thelmo Cristovam no meio da Floresta Amazônica, em volta do lago Mamori, localizado a quilômetros de distância de qualquer sinal de civilização. Quatro dos seis álbuns do projeto já foram lançados na internet e os próximos dois estão em finalização. Na página do selo musical Test Tube, de Portugal, ele foi escutado por mais de mil pessoas em menos de um mês. O artista tem certeza que faz música, apesar de poder ser questionado quanto a isso, mas também não está muito preocupado com esse tipo de classificação ou julgamento. "Sou músico, mas nunca conseguiria fazer uma canção", exemplifica.

O trabalho de Thelmo Cristovam raramente é divulgado na mídia no Brasil, a não ser em publicações alternativas especializadas. Seus discos, contudo, já foram lançados por selos de países como Estados Unidos, Alemanha, França, Grécia, Portugal, Suécia, Argentina, Holanda e Austrália. No Recife, ele já foi DJ de jazz nas quintas-feiras do bar Garagem (há mais de quatro anos), colaborou com os artistas dos grupos Moluscos Lama, Re:Combo e Telephone Colorido, entre outros, e participa de bandas como Hrönir e Nuclear Extreme.

Em Field recordings, Thelmo deixava os microfones sozinhos no meio da floresta e depois tentava se distanciar o máximo possível, pois a presença do homem pode ser sentida por determinados animais (e pelos gravadores) a uma distância de mais de um quilômetro. Com o projeto, portanto, ele capta aquilo que nenhum ser humano é capaz de escutar ao vivo.
As gravações ocorreram quando Thelmo foi selecionado como bolsista de uma oficina com o músico basco Francisco López, que trabalha com música concreta absoluta. Os alunos passaram dez dias na floresta, em uma casa de madeira que funciona como laboratório de arte do grupo europeu Malab. Ao todo, ele registrou mais de dez horas de sons da natureza. Para cada disco, seleciona trechos contínuos dessas sessões.
Se alguém ouvir Field recordings com um fone de ouvido, portanto, pode fechar os olhos e dormir com a impressão de estar em plena selva. Em alto volume, a complexidade desses conjuntos de sons é amplificada, com momentos de harmonia absoluta ou de ruído caótico estridente. A quantidade de aves que tiveram seu canto registrado simultaneamente, por exemplo, é praticamente incalculável. Nenhum trecho se repete. Cada novo minuto é diferente do anterior. O resultado se modifica completamente de acordo com o horário e o local onde foram feitas as gravações.

"Qualquer imbecil faz isso", comentou um internauta na página do Test Tube após ouvir o trabalho de Thelmo. Em um projeto como esse, no entanto, o papel do artista não é tocar um instrumento ou escrever uma composição. O gesto criativo está em tomar decisões sobre onde e como gravar e editar o material depois de ouvir tudo com calma para selecionar o que entra no disco. Ao ser transportado para o contexto da arte, esse conteúdo sonoro (nunca uma tentativa de reprodução da realidade natural) é absorvido pelos ouvidos com novos significados, surgidos a partir das interpretações espontâneas de quem ouve.

Nada é o que parece ser

"Não trabalho com notas musicais", explica Thelmo Cristovam. Seu trabalho não é pautado pelas convenções do que costuma ser entendido como música. Os conceitos a que todos estão acostumados, afinal, nasceram de contextos sócio-culturais e hegemonias artísticas. Se a história recente da humanidade fosse menos influenciada por padrões hierárquicos europeus, noções de "erudição" ou "melodia", por exemplo, seria completamente diferente.
Thelmo tem um disco chamado Trombone. A maneira como ele extrai sons desse instrumento de sopro, no entanto, não tem nada a ver com a forma como ele foi feito para ser tocado. Em outros álbuns e apresentações ao vivo, o artista faz o mesmo com um saxofone e com um trompete, pois está mais interessado em testar as possibilidades da interação entre os microfones e a estrutura física desses metais. A sonoridade resultante é irreconhecível.

Sua formação universitária não é em música, mas em física e matemática. No disco Mercado de São José, ele simplesmente gravou o som ambiente do lugar-título enquanto caminhava ao seu redor. Atualmente, Thelmo tem se dedicado a uma peça contínua com mais de seis horas de duração, que não pode ser interrompida ou dividida em discos separados, então precisaria ser executada em algum tipo de audioinstalação. Também estão entre suas atividades a criação de novos tipos de ruídos e o estudo das formas de reverberação e propagação das ondas no espaço.

Ele inventa boa parte de seus processos de criação, mas também se baseia em métodos praticados em diversos países, desenvolvidos em escolas e movimentos estéticos legitimados, como o concretismo, o free jazz e a eletroacústica. "this both artist bring more than an empty space composition cliche, actually they discover a forgotten world, a world that is there but nobody notices it anymore... or anybody wants to notice. and it is because watching the slideshow, it inmediately takes you to a walk tru the corridors, the rooms and halls. And the questions come to surface in a second? what happened here? what kind of people was attended in this room? it was a injuried soldier? a happy pregnant mother giving birth?
an old man waiting for the last breath of his life?

While the walk continues on every picture, a feeling of sadness, solitude, forgotten, depressive and nostalgic when the sun tries in vain to warm these rooms, and a mistery around it is overpassing the eyes, mind and hearth of the expectator, but... stop walking is not a choice. at the same time thousands of questions will remain with no answer: why this place is not used anymore? why they dont just tear it down and build a new thing? does anybody cares about this place? all that dust, rusty, broken windows and wide empty spaces just remain quiet with memories of echoes, voices and situations that happened there and no one will tell.

even worse for my hearth: die minimalistic background sounds makes me going down, keeping my hearth cold, hopeless for an answer and fitting to my heartbeat and unexpected noises turns my skin with goosebumps not of scary, but yes: for emptyness.

I loved it, yes, this travel took me to the basement of my own personal ghosts and took me back to reality, I would recommend to everyone to have this travel and find their own basements without the classical gothic way for personal suffering: just real places, real pictures and the real noises in your head. I will be waiting for the next walk."

In this new release of the german colective EXurban, crossover by two influent projects of the electronic german music scene, we find some sort of aproaching between languages as, for an instance, dark ambient, electronica, musique concrete, field recordings, electroacustic music, idm, downtempo, and so on.
