Tetarise - k.a.ma.

Se dissermos que Tetarise é influenciado pelo trabalho de Paul Van Dyk e Robert Miles podemos ser responsáveis por uma má (primeira) impressão, mas estas influências são mais que assumidas pelo músico russo nascido em 1987 em Kursk (Russia), mas de nome desconhecido. Tetarise surge em 2008 no seguimento de “Yevgen” cujo trabalho se ficou pelo lançamento de 3 remisturas.

Em “k.a.m.a.” há uma ideia nostálgica, uma música meio enovoada que não sendo triste, provoca um sorriso, mas não uma gargalhada. “k.a.m.a.” é confortável, mas não despojado de energia. É calmo, mas quente sem nos deixar relaxar totalmente.

Algures entre o IDM e o psy chill-out (“North-West Connection (Rework 2010)” é um bom exemplo) , “k.a.m.a” é o disco ideal para condimentar um dia de Inverno.

When Tiago Morgado idealized Algorrithmic Chaos for his DNP X-Citer alter ego he thought of a way to break, in a certain way, with the IDM tradition, following some of the guidelines defined by Scanner the german musician (in the sense of not confining IDM to reductionist formulas). The background for this DNP X-Citer ep is Tiago's influences and reverence to artists such as Aphex Twin, Autechre (warp records), Alva Noto, Ryochi Ikeda and Byetone (raster noton) but also Nine Inch Nails and his approach to industrial rock that Einsturzende Neubauten, Throbbing Gristle and etc... brought to music. All this influences can be identified in the electronic part of the DNP X-Citer ep which serves as the basis for an improvised "free/structured" with alto viola. Again in this improvisation several references can be found, such as, Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, Pharaoh Sunders, Frank Zappa, John Zorn, Otomo Yoshihide, Fred Frith, Evan Parker, among others.

The electronic part of the ep was worked with the use of algorithmic composition techniques, where instruments in the DAW (digital audio workstation/sequenciador) were triggered by MIDI, according to simple theoretical and systematized assumptions from the AC Toolbox (designed by Paul Berg from the Sound Institute of Haia). tiago morgado as been working with these tool because he believes that it can be helpful in his work with algorithmic composition.

Algorrithmic Chaos is a technical work, without an a priori conceptual background, but when Tiago Morgado analyzed it a posteriori an organized chaos appeared. And based on that, using contemplation maybe you the listener can identify a theme for this ep.

[xs-63] subterminal - filled with light

With eyes wide open.
Like in a reawakening. A strange awake that repeats itself every night; every passing day, or so it seems. Like a virtual experience; or maybe not. Maybe it is just a normal but scary awakening. ... "Filled With Light".

"Filled With Light" awakens us in two different ways. The first, because it is only an EP which is part of an album yet to be released; the second, because in that album, poetry, a core element always present in Subterminal's work, makes an eulogy to digital life. "Filled With Light" is like a trailer of a full movie that we anticipate; a summary with a beginning middle and end. For now, the awakening is what matters most and "Filled With Light" awakes; awakes us.

In that slow awake, "With You" introduces us to the theme, to the electronic principle that conducts the EP. However, "Filled With Light" is the track that captures our attention; because of the movement; the layers of sound; the excellent alto viola played by Tiago Morgado. There is a slight techno-industrial mood coloring Leonardo Rosado's words, the man behind Subterminal. At last, "For the First Time" definitely introduces us to what's coming. A confrontation with a different reality; or, an almost-reality. "For the First Time" introduces us to a confrontation between poetry and technology, created by dense sound ambiences, images, differing in rhythm and form. They are different lines of the same life; parallel or perpendicular. The exhaustion of conflict.

"Filled With Light" was composed and played almost entirely with an iPhone, with some extra sounds from other objects. After "Alumina" and "Insight", released in 2009, the reawakening of Subterminal is of happiness. "Filled With Light" is a great step forward when comparing with prior releases, which leads to the expectation of a very interesting conceptual album. Coupled with the refinement of his personal electronic universe, the author added a better voice treatment. The production of the EP was made by Tiago Morgado.

[xs-62] hola one & elka brown - visitors

In this new release by XS Records, Marek is back, this time together with elka brown, who has colaborated in this album with a remix of a song and some more colaborations. Personally, the main difference I see between this and the last album, is basically the production (in terms of mixing and mastering) which is signifcantly better in relation to last one.. also there has started to appear some drum machine components, which give a more rithmic character to visitors that hygh. Marek is a resident at Vombat Radio, where his tracks are featured in the electric city radio show, and which has allowed us to be partners of that radio. Hope you guys enjoy this release as much as we've done.

Venho por este meio anunciar a release de subterminal (aka leonardo rosado), na clinical archives, na qual tive o prazer de colaborar no tema frozen tide, a tocar viola d'arco. intitulada insight, trata-se de uma reflexão sobre o paradoxo da causa-efeito. Trata-se de um álbum assumidamente trip-hop com influências de toda uma série de músicos e projectos maioratariamente alemães, de trip hop, idm, dark ambient, industrial e spoken word, de destacar agf, exurban, adamned.age, die minimalistn, einsturzende neubauten, coil, swans, alva noto, throbbing gristle, etc.

The premise of the album Insight comes from a possible definition of INSIGHT - An insight is the derivation of a rule which links cause with effect. The mind is a model of the universe built up from insights. - Based on this, Insight was composed using a random process of forward expansion of musical structures, establishing an equilibrium state and jumping to new territory, a different direction than the previous one, leading to insights on different musical styles. It starts with an approach to ambiance, changes to nujazz structures, continues the journey through contemporary music (with the help of Tiago Morgado playing Alto Viola in Track 3) and finishes with an approach to trip hop. The message delivered by the album, the explosion of communication technologies and their reflection on the way we interact with each other, the insights allowed by science and its contradictions.

Suterminal is the expression of one person with its main focus on exploring the collision between soundscapes and poetry, using automatic expression based on science - WORDSOUNDSCAPES. The automata is used on the construction of words/poems and sounds/music that jointly deliver messages to the society towards activities of REFLECTION. Words and sounds have different meanings, depending on its listener, but only if he/she takes sometime to dwelve in the complexity of him/herself stimulated.

Electronic Animal - Fast Food Music

"Fast Food Music" marca a estreia editorial de Electronic Animal, alter-ego do produtor de música electrónica mais dançável Peter Pan (nota: ver entrevista aqui).

Conjugando um vasto conjunto de influências que vão do techno Minimal à IDM, passando por algumas aproximações a sons psicadélicos e também a sonoridades mais chill, Electronic Animal encontrou nos restaurantes de comida rápida a sua fonte de inspiração.

"Fast Food Music" contém 9 temas que retratam uma sociedade maquinal, sempre igual, feita de vícios e de rotinas em que a percepção dos porquês e do que a envolve tem cada vez menos importância face aos imperativos do consumo imediato do "mastiga e deita fora".

Solar Fiels - Cocoon Moon

Se soubermos que Magnus Birgersson (ou Solar Fields) compoe bandas sonoras para jogos e documentários ficamos com a sensação que algumas dúvidas de dissipam e o puzzle se vai resolvendo. Movendo-se entre o visto e revisto chillout psicadélico que alimenta toneladas de compilações, Solar Fields, esta edição da Kahvi é composta por 4 temas de diferentes discos de Magnus Birgersson, todos eles lançados pela Ultimae Records. De facto, este “Cocoon Moon” foi uma “prendinha” de natal e ano novo da Ultimae à Kahvi aquando da edição de “Movements” (edição física) vendo, portanto, a luz do dia ao mesmo tempo.

“Cocoon Moon” toca na música electrónica ambiental, no trance e vai ao chillout, sempre mais com um olho no cérebro que nos pés impondo-se uma paisagem (praia, campo, floresta...) para completar esta banda sonora de pouco menos de meia-hora. Mais emocional que épica, “Feelings (Album Mix) (Radio Edit)” acenta o arraial no IDM e “Infection 268-7” mostra o outro lado da moeda (ou da arte), dançável e concentrado.

Coexistindo entre o netaudio (em menor proporção) e as edições comerciais, Solar Fields pode ser visto/ouvido em Portugal no próximo mês de Agosto (dia 7) no Freedom Festival (http://palcoprincipal.sapo.pt/eventos/festival/freedom_festival).

The Sales Department - [Sub]ways

Este artigo escrevi-o inicialmente para o BrainDance, mas faz todo o sentido publicá-lo também aqui, ainda que com alguns retoques.

"[Sub]ways" do projecto canadiano The Sales Department, foi editado em finais de outubro pela Test Tube. The Sales Department é o mais recente alter-ego do músico e produtor canadiano MD Matheson, que depois de uma experiência de mais de uma década com mentor do projecto Beef Terminal, em que a guitarra era a base dos devaneios musicais - deriva numa direcção assumidamente mais tecnológica e experimental, com uma fina e elegante conjugação de elementos electrónicos que nos proporciona um conjunto de viagens únicas e fascinantes por paisagens sonoras abstractas, idílicas e relaxantes.

Aqui a má notícia é a de que estes 5 fantásticos temas sabem, manifestamente, a pouco, mas como tudo o que é mau tem um lado bom: este EP é apenas a primeira parte de uma triologia a ser editada pela Test Tube durante os próximos meses. Venham lá, então, os outros dois!

Milieu - Blue White Nights

Um dos mais interessantes produtores de IDM da actualidade: Brian Grainger, mais conhecido como Milieu com trabalhos editados na U-Cover, Boltfish ou Experimedia, mas que também editou, recentemente, em netlabels como a Rope Swing Cities ou Archaic Horizon.

Milieu acaba de disponibilizar, no seu site, para download gratuito um EP comemorativo desta quadra natalícia: "Blue White Nights" é o seu título e contém 6 excelentes temas downtempo repletos de sonoridades orgânicas.

[tube120] Gordon Tebo - Patina Turner

Olá de novo. Não tenho aproveitado para vir aqui promover os lançamentos da test tube mais por falta de tempo do que outra coisa, e prometo que vou tentar corrigir esse facto.
Fica aqui uma chamada de atenção para o novo trabalho do Norte-americano Gordon Tebo, rapaz da boa terra que é Chicago. Gordon já lançou um trabalho na test tube anteriormente, o esquizóide 'Adaptive Immune', onde se lançava de cabeça em experimentalismos electrónicos agrestes e rugosos. Era um trabalho conceptual sobre o sistema imunológico humano.

Desta vez Gordon muda de coordenadas, embora se mantenha nos trabalhos conceptuais, e volta a oferecer-nos um EP de quatro temas mas desta feita explorando os territórios do techno e da IDM, ou melhor dizendo, do 'pós-techno' (inventei agora). 'Patina Turner' - também um trocadilho com a avó Tina (reparem na capa com atenção) - é música para dançar dentro da cabeça mas também para o corpo. Gordon atira-nos umas malhas de grande categoria, em especial a primeira e terceira faixas, repletas de teclados marados, loops hipnóticos e névoas ambientais.

And the questions come to surface in a second? what happened here? what kind of people was attended in this room? it was a injuried soldier? a happy pregnant mother giving birth?
an old man waiting for the last breath of his life?

While the walk continues on every picture, a feeling of sadness, solitude, forgotten, depressive and nostalgic when the sun tries in vain to warm these rooms, and a mistery around it is overpassing the eyes, mind and hearth of the expectator, but... stop walking is not a choice. at the same time thousands of questions will remain with no answer: why this place is not used anymore? why they dont just tear it down and build a new thing? does anybody cares about this place? all that dust, rusty, broken windows and wide empty spaces just remain quiet with memories of echoes, voices and situations that happened there and no one will tell.

even worse for my hearth: die minimalistic background sounds makes me going down, keeping my hearth cold, hopeless for an answer and fitting to my heartbeat and unexpected noises turns my skin with goosebumps not of scary, but yes: for emptyness.

I loved it, yes, this travel took me to the basement of my own personal ghosts and took me back to reality, I would recommend to everyone to have this travel and find their own basements without the classical gothic way for personal suffering: just real places, real pictures and the real noises in your head. I will be waiting for the next walk."

In this new release of the german colective EXurban, crossover by two influent projects of the electronic german music scene, we find some sort of aproaching between languages as, for an instance, dark ambient, electronica, musique concrete, field recordings, electroacustic music, idm, downtempo, and so on. An ecletic experience, to see, taste, smell and listen. Recomended.Download (.zip)

Crisopa - Medicamentosa EP

No meio da ponte que liga electrónica e as “paisagens impossíveis” da música ambiente, Crisopa (Santi Lizón, um madrileno), tem alguns EPs lançados em netlabels e dois temas em compilações da Cold Room e Miga (“Drifting Skywards 3” e “Tangencial”, respectivamente) . Nos quatro temas deste EP “Medicamentosa” lançado pela Addsensor, Crisopa aponta o caminho: Sustentados por lençóis de sons sintetizados, macios e melódicos aparecem os condimentos com instrumentos acústicos aqui e ali e os glitches que acompanham a parte rítmica das faixas com o objectivo único de acomodar “alterações neurológicas” influindo no “sistema emocional do ser humano”.

IDM para vêr o Sol a pôr ou música ambiente para olhar o mar, kitch, mas não necessariamente fácil e vazia, (“Tetris triste” ou “Nana veloz” são suculentas ainda que leves), este “Medicamentosa EP” não cansa nas primeiras audições talvez pelo cuidado que Crisopa tem a adornar as suas obras de forma consistente, mas não exagerada.

One On Twoism Series

Os Boards of Canada são um dos projectos de maior culto no actual panorama da música electrónica alternativa. O som orgânico construído à base de samples de sons artificiais dos anos 70, nomeadamente dos documentários e filmes de animação do National Film Board of Canada, onde de resto foram, assumidamente, buscar o seu nome, fez escola e tem, cada vez mais, seguidores fiéis. O fórum twoism.org é onde se agrupam esses seguidores mais indefectíveis e foi por lá que nasceu a ideia de editar uma colectânea que reunisse trabalhos de alguns projectos e produtores residentes cuja grande fonte de inspiração é, como não poderia deixar de ser, o trabalho dos Boards of Canada.

O primeiro One On Twoism foi disponibilizado de forma gratuita (mp3 | flac lossless) através do referido site em Março de 2007. "One On Twoism Volume 2" (mp3 | flac lossless) foi disponibilizado, também de forma livre e gratuita, já no final do passado mês de Fevereiro, através da nova etiqueta Twoism Records, criada prepositadamente para editar estas compilações. Foi através desta segunda edição que tive conhecimento da iniciativa e que fui em busca de mais informação. De entre os nomes incluídos em ambas as compilações, dois nomes me chamaram a atenção: Saturday Index, que em Novembro último haviam publicado um excelente EP "Partly Cloudy" pela Archaic Horizon e os lisboetas Structura, já com dois trabalhos editados pela MiMi Records: "Chemin de Fer" e "Erlebniss". Sendo fã confesso dos BoC e tendo boas referências a escuta era obrigatória.
Nestas compilações temos o universo do BoC duplamente revisto por uma considerável legião de seguidores, em que cada um dá a sua própria interpretação, misturadas de forma sublime por um tal de Grim on Mbient. Música obscura de uma beleza imensa que apetece ouvir uma e outra vez de olhos fechados deixando a imaginação vaguear por dimensões paralelas e universos inexplorados.

Entretanto e enquanto se aguardam novidades acerca do próximo trabalho dos BoC, os seus fiéis seguidores preparam já o terceiro volume desta série.
